Public Health, Certificate

The Arnold School of Public Health offers the 18-hour Certificate of Graduate Study in Public Health (C.G.S.P.H.) for those who are interested in public health but who are not interested in or whose career trajectories do not require an M.P.H. The purposes of the certificate are twofold: 1. The C.G.S.P.H. offers students working in other degree programs academic training in the fundamental concepts of public health. 2. The C.G.S.P.H. provides a life-long learning opportunity on the foundations of core public health concepts for practitioners who do not wish to seek a public health degree.

Earning the certificate involves a focused learning experience in the fundamentals of public health in which candidates must complete three fundamental courses of the core public health disciplines and three elective public health courses consistent with the student’s background and interests.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of at least three of the following areas: a) fundamental principles and practices in health promotion, education, and behavior; b) philosophy, principles, and practices in health services, policy, and management; c) principles and practices in epidemiology, and tools for translating epidemiological findings into public health action; d) public health statistical applications; and e) environmental health from the perspective of the earth as a complex, dynamic system.
  • Each student will demonstrate competence in a chosen area of interest. The student can choose to complete the public health core with one elective or to complete courses in a particular topical area (e.g., nutrition, health disparities, preparedness, evaluation, program planning, epidemiology).

Certificate Requirements (18 Hours)

  • Public Health Core (9 Hours)
