Exercise Science, Ph.D.



Learning Outcomes

  • Applied Physiology doctoral students will demonstrate mastery of the physiological changes that occur during a single session of exercise and the physiological adaptations that take place with repeated exercise sessions and how environmental conditions influence these responses.
  • Health Aspects of Physical Activity doctoral students will demonstrate mastery of the relationship between physical activity and physical and mental health; the factors that influence physical activity participation in diverse populations as well as the effective approaches to increase physical activity in these diverse populations.
  • Rehabilitation Science doctoral students will demonstrate mastery of the knowledge and theory of motor skill acquisition throughout the lifespan and the relationship to rehabilitation and health. 
  • Doctoral students will be able to develop a series of research questions that advance the state of knowledge in the field of exercise science.

Degree Requirements (60 Post-Baccalaureate Hours)

  • Exercise Science (12-18 Hours)
  • Research/Statistical Methods (6-12 Hours)
  • Electives (18-30 Hours)
  • Dissertation (12 Hours)

Additional Requirements

Students will ordinarily complete 6-12 hours of independent research (EXSC 790 ) in addition to 12 dissertation hours.

Students are required to have a grounding in Public Health consisting of PUBH 700  and EPID 700 /EPID 701 .

Students are also required to select one of the following areas of specialization and complete 15 or more hours of course work in that area:

  1. Applied Physiology
  2. Health Aspects of Physical Activity
  3. Rehabilitation Sciences
