Athletic Training, M.S.

The Masters of Science in Athletic Training is a CAATE-accredited professional program that culminates in students eligible to sit for the BOC examination. The mission of the MS in Athletic Training program is to A) provide interdisciplinary approaches to medicine through designed clinical educational experiences for students in a variety of settings and interactions with different health care professionals, B) teach students to access, interpret, and integrate relevant research into their clinical decision making through didactic and clinical education that focuses on evidence-based medicine, and C) enhance professional development of students through community engagement and recognize the role of the athletic trainer as a healthcare provider within the larger context of a changing healthcare system.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level athletic trainers to use a systematic approach to ask and answer clinically relevant questions that affect patient care by using review and application of existing research evidence.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to develop and implement strategies and programs to prevent the incidence and/or severity of injuries and illnesses and optimize their clients’/patients’ overall health and quality of life.
  • Students will demonstrate strong clinical examination skills in order to accurately diagnose and effectively treat their patients
  • Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate and immediately management acute injuries and illnesses.
  • Students will be able to assess a patient’s status using clinician- and patient-oriented outcome measures and, based on this assessment and with consideration of the stage of healing and goals, design a therapeutic intervention to maximize the patient’s participation and health-related quality of life.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to recognize clients/patients exhibiting abnormal social, emotional, and mental behaviors and to intervene and refer these individuals as necessary.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of risk management, healthcare delivery mechanisms, insurance, reimbursement, documentation, patient privacy, and facility management.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to maintain current competence, practice within the limits of state and national regulation using moral and ethical judgment and work collaboratively with other healthcare providers.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to synthesize and integrate knowledge, skills, and clinical decision-making into actual client/patient care.

Program Admission Requirements

Program admission requirements include the successful completion of a bachelor of science degree in a related field from an accredited institution and the following coursework:

Biology with lab 4 credits
Chemistry with lab 4 credits
Physics with lab 4 credits
Anatomy and Physiology 8 credits
Exercise Physiology  4 credits
Psychology 3 credits
Nutrition 3 credits
Statistics 3 credits
Biomechanics 3 credits

Degree Requirements (58 Hours)

The M.S. in Athletic Training is a 2-year intense program of study that includes 5 clinical practicums, including a 5-credit clinical immersion experience during a student’s final semester. The program is 58 credits, similar to most CAATE-accredited graduate programs in athletic training. The program courses are as follows:

Year Two (27 Hours)

Summer Two (7 Hours)

Fall Two (12 Hours)

Spring Two (8 Hours)
