Gerontology, Certificate



Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to describe interventions, programs, and policies designed to address the needs of older adults.
  • Students will be able to describe topics covering areas relevant to service delivery to older adults, including disease processes, nutrition, physical activity, and medical ethics.   
  • Students will be able to apply gerontological knowledge, through a practicum experience in which the student works with, or on behalf of, older adults in a campus, community, or agency setting that serves this population.

This certificate program provides you with the knowledge and skills to effectively meet the needs of the aging population in a wide range of careers. there are opportunities in nursing, teaching, service, social work, public health, mental health administration, and research that focus on the needs and interests of older adults. these opportunities also exist within government programs and agencies; public and private institutions that provide health, education, and social services; research centers; special interest groups; colleges and universities; and corporate human services divisions.

Certificate Requirements (21 Hours)

The College of Social Work participates in the University’s Gerontology Certificate program. This is a 21-credit hour, interdisciplinary course of study aimed at preparing professionals from a number of fields for specialized work with older adults. Some of the elective courses of the M.S.W. program can be used to fulfill the requirements for the certificate.

The Certificate in Gerontology represents a specialization in the field of gerontology. It is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of individuals who work with older adults by providing an educational experience that is multi-disciplinary in nature.

The program covers:

  • Social and cultural aspects of aging
  • Biological and psychological aspects of aging
  • Families in later life
  • Current issues in aging
